4th February 2022
6 pm onwards
A journalist for almost 40 years, Meher Marfatia was former assistant editor of The Illustrated Weekly of India, and text editor of Marg Publications and the Art India magazine. She now works as a freelance writer-editor, besides being a publisher in recent years.
Her independent imprint, 49/50 Books, focuses on lesser known communities and cultures. Its first title, Laughter in the House: 20th-Century Parsi Theatre, went on to spark a vital revival of the traditional Parsi naatak with Adi Marzban’s veteran actors starring in the successful stage production, also called Laughter in the House, based on her book.
She next compiled and co-published two editions of the popular Gujarati phrase-book, Parsi Bol, with photographer-filmmaker Sooni Taraporevala.
Once Upon A City is her most recent book, inspired by the ongoing Sunday Midday column she writes on local history.
In conversation with her writer friend and city lover Shabnam Minwalla, Meher looks forward to sharing stories about Bombay gems: both people and places. These feature ordinary men and women, who have contributed in extraordinary ways to build the city we all love – and which Parsis across the world have fond bonds with.
