Seated in South Bombay, Kyani’s & Co. is one of the oldest surviving Parsi eateries in town!
If vintage high ceilings, round tables with checkered mats, sepia-toned frames and the aroma of perfectly cooked Parsi food are your picks, then Kyani’s & Co. is where you need to be at. Standing tall since 1904 in a corner lane at Marine Lines, South Bombay, this cafe is famed to be one of the oldest remaining cafes in Mumbai. Cocooned in a building that looks its age, Kyani’s, as it is lovingly called, is a token of Mumbai’s transient yet rich culture.
Old is definitely Gold!
A landmark of the Mumbai heritage walk, Kyani’s still adorns the look and decor of its first day, taking you on a time-travel ride back to the 20th century. Founded by Mr. Khdodram as a means to introduce the unparalleled taste of Irani cuisine to a busy Mumbai city, this place has been known throughout for its selection of confections and patisserie.
But the trends changed in 1995, when Farokh Shokri took charge of the cafe. By the year 2000, Kyani’s had become the hub of choicest Parsi delicacies, ranging from bun maska, sali boti, Akuri, kheema pao to the legendary mawa cake, that still do the rounds here. The bakery section too stands its ground, against the large glass panes, with jars full of biscuits and cookies- gripping the quintessence of its original concept.
While Kyani’s is changing with the twists of time and people’s fascination with new resto pubs and contemporary cafes, it is one of the meager 25 cafes that remain, from over 350, in 1950. And while its essence is fading slowly with each brick of modern Mumbai, the cafe is a super hit among young couples, college students, travellers and other age-old regulars – who dive in its homely culinary exquisiteness at pocket-friendly prices!
Knock Knock
Today, this dark-wood cafe stands as an integral part of the Parsi cafe culture, which once ruled the city of Mumbai. Kyani’s is baking alive the taste of tradition with its tempting delicacies and surely deserves all your attention and love! So when in South Bombay, head out to this cafe for a satiating meal, just at any time of the day and you sure won’t be disappointed!
